Mr Vikas Shankar is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at The Highfield Hospital with over 15 years of experience. He completed his medical degree at Nagpur University, India in 2007 before relocating to the UK. After moving to the UK, he completed his basic surgical training in Ophthalmology at prestigious institutions such as Glasgow and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He then pursued higher specialist training in Aberdeen, where he refined his skills to the highest level. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2013 and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2014. Mr Shankar later completed a fellowship in Glaucoma surgery at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, during which he underwent extensive training in advanced glaucoma surgery, including augmented trabeculectomy, aqueous-shunt procedures (specifically Baerveldt implants, Preserflo microshunt), and laser treatments for glaucoma. Mr Shankar has over 500 augmented trabeculectomies and more than 250 aqueous shunt procedures under his belt, as well as expertise in micro-incisional glaucoma surgery, particularly with Xen implants, Preserflo microshunt. His skill set extends to complex anterior segment surgeries, including cataract surgery. Alongside his clinical work, Mr Shankar runs a glaucoma fellowship program and participates in the North-West deanery training program. He has research interests in open-angle glaucoma and has written several research papers in this field. He holds professional memberships with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the European Glaucoma Society and the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society.
