This information is provided by Mr Tomas Madura.
I am a Consultant Hand, Plastic and Peripheral Nerve Surgeon based in Birmingham, specialising in advanced hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, microsurgery, nerve reconstruction and paralysis recovery. With more than 25 years of surgical experience and a PhD in Neurobiology, my practice is dedicated to restoring movement, sensation and function following complex injuries and conditions affecting the hand and peripheral nerves. I provide highly specialised care for both common and complex conditions, including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Trigger Finger, Dupuytren’s Contracture, hand arthritis, hand trauma, peripheral nerve injuries, nerve tumours, brachial plexus injuries, chronic nerve pain and muscle paralysis. My specialist expertise includes advanced reconstructive procedures such as nerve repair and reconstruction, nerve transfers, tendon transfers, microsurgery and Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR). I have particular experience in complex upper limb reconstruction, brachial plexus paralysis and functional restoration following severe trauma and nerve injury. My career combines specialist clinical practice with academic research and international surgical training. After graduating with High Honours, I completed a PhD in Neurobiology at Osaka University, Japan, before undertaking Specialist Plastic Surgery training in Manchester. I later completed advanced fellowship training in the reconstructive treatment of brachial plexus paralysis at a world-renowned microsurgical centre in Japan, where I refined advanced techniques in nerve reconstruction and paralysis recovery. Following my Peripheral Nerve and Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, I completed the prestigious Postgraduate Diploma in Hand Surgery awarded by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). I now serve as a Tutor for the British Diploma in Hand Surgery, contributing to the training of future hand surgery specialists. I currently practise at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, one of Europe’s foremost centres for hand and peripheral nerve surgery, where my work includes the treatment of major trauma, military injuries, complex limb reconstruction and challenging peripheral nerve conditions. Alongside my surgical practice, I remain actively involved in academic research, with publications and presentations in leading international journals and conferences. My research interests include nerve regeneration, microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery and reconstructive surgery. I also serve as a National Specialist Adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), contributing to the development of national standards and evidence-based guidance in peripheral nerve surgery. My approach is centred on combining surgical precision, scientific expertise and personalised patient care to achieve the highest possible level of functional recovery and quality of life for every patient
