Mr Young is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina and cataract surgery. His undergraduate medical degree was completed at the University of Dundee whereafter he spent time in Glasgow, Derby and Wales for his Ophthalmology training. He carried out fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery in New Zealand: Christchurch and Auckland. Mr Young-Zvandasara is a former Clinical lead for the North of Tyne and Gateshead Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. He also completed a masters degree in Engineering at Cardiff University. He undertakes research projects at the University of Newcastle and University of Manchester. His main research interests are in retina, diabetes as well as bringing Engineering principles and technology further into medicine.
