He graduated in 1998 from Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. He completed an integrated 6 year residency program in General Surgery with specialist laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal training at University Hospital of Patras, Greece, at IRCAD (Research Institute for Digestive Cancer) in Strasbourg, France and at Carlanderska Metabolic Centre Gothenburg, Sweden. He received his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2008 (following Board Exams) at University Hospital of Patras in Greece, where he continued his higher specialist training in Metabolic and Bariatric surgery in the Unit of Clinical Severe Obesity at UHP (IFSO—Centre of Excellence). He pursued further specialist training at King's College Hospital where subsequently was appointed as Consultant Surgeon. In 2013, he was awarded his PhD with honours in the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery. He has received his Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons (England) in 2016. He holds full membership of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), the International Federation of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), the British Hernia Society (BHS) and the European Hernia Society (EHS). His research interests are in Metabolic & Bariatric surgery and management of Obesity where he has been actively involved in many research projects, and he is the author of several publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. Mr Panagiotopoulos is a clinical supervisor for specialist training in Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery for UK trainees and fellows at King's College Hospital and educational supervisor for senior clinical fellows in International Fellowship Program in Metabolic and Diabetes Surgery at King’s (RCSE approved). His personal interests include; sports activities (swimming, tennis & diving), hiking and travelling.
