Dr Sophie Barrett

Having graduated in medicine from the universities of Cambridge and London in 1994, I moved to Glasgow in 1997, where I completed my training in medical oncology and was awarded an MD by the University of Glasgow, for work analysing markers of chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer. I have been a consultant at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre since 2008, specialising in treating patients with breast cancer. I was breast oncology lead for the West of Scotland between 2010 and 2019 and SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) lead for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde between 2018 and 2023. I am currently the West of Scotland network lead for breast cancer and the clinical chair of the Scottish Breast Cancer Clinical Management Pathways Editorial Group. I treat patients with breast cancer with all forms of systemic therapy, including chemotherapy, biological therapies, endocrine (hormone) treatment, targeted therapies and immunotherapy. I am also an active participant in breast cancer clinical trials in the West of Scotland and I am a member of regional and national groups involved in service development and the introduction of new medicines into the NHS. I am also interested in the management of longer term toxicities of breast cancer treatment, particularly menopausal symptoms and I am currently undertaking an additional qualification in this area. I am a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the Association of Cancer Physicians and the UK Breast Cancer Group.
