Dr Simon Smale

After qualifying in Nottingham, Dr Smale undertook his early postgraduate training at Queens Medical Centre andNorthampton General Hospital. He then moved to London where he worked at the Royal Free Hospital and for the greater part pf his Higher Specialist Trainng Kings College Hospital, under the mentorshi of the late Ian Forgacs (Former BSG president) and Professor Ingvar Bjarnason. He began his first consultant job in York in 2005 where he served as college tutor and Training Program Director for Continuing Medical Trainees. He subsequently moved to Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2018, where he currently serves as Clinical Director for GI Medicine and SUrgery for Manchester Foundation NHS Trust. He is married and in his spare time enjoys gardening, riding bicycles, swimming and has previously compete for the Great Britian Age Group Triathlon Team. More recently he has enjoyed completing the Cent Cols Challenge.

Irritable bowel syndrome, Functional GI disease, Coeliac disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, Inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Smale is predominantly a luminal gastroenterologist although also has training in pancreatic disease and hepatology.
