Mr Sebastian Smolarek qualified at Wroclaw Medical University in Poland in 2005 with an MD. He gained extensive experience internationally throughout his surgical training career. he started his surgical training in the Department of General and Oncological Surgery in Wroclaw. In 2013 he completed his General Surgical training and began working in Ireland where he went on to complete a Fellowship in Laparoscopic Surgery. In 2015, he was awarded 'The European Society Fellowship' in Rome and followed this with an 'Advanced Pelvic Oncology Fellowship' in Wales. In 2015, Mr Smolarek gained his Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeon's Ireland qualification. Since March 2016 he has been appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at University Hospital Plymouth. Throughout his consultant career, he has been passionately involved in teaching, research and quality improvement projects. he was the first surgeon to perform Robotic Colorectal Resections in the South West of England. He also developed the 'Colon Capsule Endoscopy' service in Plymouth. Mr Smolarek deals with all aspects of colorectal disease. His particular areas of expertise are colorectal cancer, advanced pelvic oncology, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, proctology and surgery for inflammatory bowel disease. he also has a great interest in hernia surgery, both open and laparoscopic.
