Dr Sarah Westwell

Qualifications: MBChB University of Bristol Medical School 1995 MRCP Royal College of Physicians UK 1998 FRCR Royal College of Radiologists 2003 Dr Sarah Westwell is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the management and treatment of patients with malignant melanoma and carcinoma of the breast. She was appointed to the role of Clinical Director for Cancer Services at Brighton an d Sussex Universities NHS Trust in February 2018. Dr Westwell studied medicine at the University of Bristol Medical School and after gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998 she undertook specialist oncology training at University College Hospital in London and Mount Vernon Hospital in Middlesex obtaining fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2003. She spent 12 months working as clinical fellow at The Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Dr Westwell was appointed to a substantive Consultant Clinical Oncology post at The Sussex Cancer Centre in 2008. She is interested in the individualisation of patient treatment and the use of novel targeted therapies and immunotherapies to treat malignant melanoma, breast cancer and rare skin cancers. She works with the multi-disciplinary melanoma and breast cancer teams and the regional specialist skin cancer team to provide high quality treatment and care for her patients. Dr Westwell has a keen interest in research and strives to offer all patients access to suitable clinical trials. She is principle investigator fro several national clinical trials in Brighton and works closely with the melanoma and breast teams at the Royal Marsden Hospital referring patients for clinical trials unavailable locally. Dr Westwell has an active teaching role and regularly teaches Brighton and Sussex University medical students, Allied Health professionals and other medical colleagues. She was regional clinical Tutor for the Specialist Registrars in training between 2016 and 2018.

Dr Westwell specialises in the management and treatment of high risk and advanced malignant melanoma using immune check point inhibitors and targeted therapies and the management of early and advanced secondary breast cancer using chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted agents and radiotherapy. She also treats rare skin cancers including merkel cell carcinoma and HIV related kaposi sarcoma She is principle investigator of several national clinical trails at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
