Mr Sanjay Purkayastha is a consultant general surgeon with a specialist interest in bariatric and upper GI (gastrointestinal) surgery.
He regularly performs laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures for a wide variety of conditions. Patients seeking a highly trained and skilled bariatric surgeon can benefit from his leading expertise in all procedures in surgical weight loss management, including gastric bands, sleeve gastrectomies, gastric bypasses. He also provides the surgical management of type 2 diabetes.

He trained at Saint Mary’s Hospital Medical School and the Imperial School of Medicine London where he completed his BSc in 1997, MBBS in 2000 and his MD in 2007. He obtained his MRCS in 2004 and FRCS in 2010 from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. Throughout his training, he was awarded numerous times for excellence in teaching and patient care. He has also spent time during his training in the US at renowned centres such as Cook Country Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic.
More recently, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Purkayastha and a GP colleague teamed up with Hollywood actor Thandie Newton in a campaign to provide one million surgical masks to care homes free of charge. He also worked closely with fashion retailer Burberry to provide St Mary's Hospital with one tonne of surgical gowns to help with the shortfall of PPE protection during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. During the current Covid-19 surge, Mr Purkayastha has collaborated with Mr John Vincent and LEON to provide more than 300 meals per day for the ICU staff at St Mary's Hospital.
Mr Purkayastha is an avid researcher and educator. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and nearly 8000 citations. Furthermore, he is a clinic senior lecturer (associate Professor) at Imperial College London.
