I qualified in Medicine from India in 1985 and comleted by MD (Medicine) in 1990. I then worked as Registrar Medicine in Delhi and passed my Dip Nat Board exam in 1992. I came to the UK in 1995 and passed PLAB at first attempt. Having completed my SHO rotation at Hull Royal infirmary and Exeter, I moved to Croydon University Hospital as research fellow in 1998 having passed MRCP in 1998. I worked for 2.5 years at Croydon after which I was selected as Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in the SW London training programme. My rotations included Worthing, Chertsey, Croydon, St George's Hospital and Kingston. Apart from gastroscopy and colonoscopy, I trained in ERCPs as well. I was appointed locum Consultant at Croydon University Hospital in 2006 and was made a substantive consultant in 2009. Since then I have been doing Gastroenterology/hepatology and Medicine taking part in on call medical rota. I have also been actively involved in research and have about 80 publicaions. I was part of Nutrition Support Team that was short listed for BMJ awards. Presentations at the British Society of Gastroenterology won the best flash poster in 2025. My work was presented at Research and Development day at Croydon and won the best research award, best audit award. I am currently participating in the Gondomar trial in IBD and exploring participation in BEST 4 trial for Capsule sponge. I have made various contributions to service improvements at Croydon University Hospital over the years including introduction of Barretts surveillance lists (till 2025), PEG protocol , patient information leaflets for endoscopic procedures, Consent forms. I was lead for a project to streamline consent process for patients lacking mental capacity as a Listening into Action initiative. I was also the joint Nutrition Support team lead and previously jointly led the Clostridium difficile lead. My particular interest in cancers has resulted in me being the Cancer lead for the Trust for about 6 years and leading the Upper GI and liver cancer team for about 14 years. I am proficient at doing therapeutic procedures like oesophageal dilatation and stents, stents for gastric outlet obstruction, ERCP to treat patients with obstruction of bile duct due to cancer or stones, inserting feeding tubes (PEGs) apart from gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
Endoscopy procedures including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, oesophageal pH and Manometry studies, BRAVO pH monitoring, wireless capsule endoscopy, oesophageal dilatation and stents, pyloric dilatations and tents, ERCP with stone removal and for malignancy, breath test for bacterial overgrowth, bile acid malabsorption, acid related disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, jaundice and abnormal liver function tests, chronic pancreatitis, chronic liver disease, push and balloon enteroscopy, PEG tube insertions, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, difficulty in swallowing, abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, vomiting blood bloating, Crohns disease, colitis, coeliac disease, Primary biliary cholangitis, Barretts oesophagus Research interest include participation in liquid biopsy for diagnosis of stage 3/4 pancreatic or biliary cancers, BOSS and ASPECT Aspect Excel extension trials for Barretts oesophagus, National pilot on Capsule sponge for diagnosis of Barretts oesophagus in patients with reflux symptoms. IBD trials include Icare, IMSAT and currently GONDOMAR trial. Also participated in national audits on Upper GI bleed and PEUGIC audit.
