Mr Ronan Gray is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. His specialist practice, based in Belfast City Hospital, includes surgery for oesophageal and gastric cancer, large hiatus hernias, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and swallowing difficulties (achalasia). He performs Emergency General Surgery in the Royal Victoria Hospital and Day Case Surgery in the Mater Hospital. In addition to the management of complex upper gastrointestinal diseases, his area of expertise includes laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of gallstone-related problems and hernias of the abdominal wall / inguinal (groin) region. Mr Gray completed his undergraduate medical training at Queen’s University Belfast, graduating with honours in 2006. He trained in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery in Northern Ireland. During this postgraduate surgical training he was awarded a Masters in Advanced Surgical Practice from Cardiff University in 2013. He was also awarded a PhD by Queen’s University Belfast in 2017 for his thesis investigating the role of aspirin and statin use in bowel cancer survival. To facilitate this research Mr Gray obtained over £230,000 in competitive research funding through the HSC R&D (NI) Doctoral Fellowship programme and a Cancer Research UK Bursary. He maintains a strong academic interest and has published 27 peer-reviewed articles in the field of gastrointestinal diseases. Mr Gray complemented his specialist upper gastrointestinal training with an overseas fellowship at Flinders Medical Centre, an internationally renowned centre for oesophagogastric surgery in Adelaide, South Australia. He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 2019.
