This information is provided by Mr Rohit Kumar Dhawan.
Mr Rohit Dhawan is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery. He has been a Consultant in Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Trauma at the Royal United Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Bath, since 2022. He offers specialist assessment and treatment for painful hip and knee conditions, including osteoarthritis, with particular expertise in primary and complex hip and knee replacement surgery. His approach centres on understanding how symptoms affect each patient’s mobility, independence and quality of life. He explains the available options clearly, including non-operative treatment where appropriate, and works with patients to agree a plan suited to their needs and priorities. Mr Dhawan completed his Trauma and Orthopaedic training on the Oswestry and Stoke rotation, gaining broad experience at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital and Royal Stoke University Hospital. His training encompassed joint replacement, complex trauma, pelvic and spinal surgery, upper-limb surgery, foot and ankle surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and musculoskeletal tumours. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics, FRCS (Tr & Orth), in 2019. After completing specialist training, Mr Dhawan undertook two advanced post-CCT fellowships. At Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in Australia, he trained in hip and knee arthroplasty with Professor Andrew Shimmin. He then completed an Advanced Hip Fellowship at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. These fellowships developed his experience in contemporary joint-replacement techniques and challenging hip and knee problems. Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Dhawan has a strong academic interest in improving outcomes after joint replacement. He holds an MSc in Surgical Sciences from University College London and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on hip and knee replacement, implant performance, complications and enhanced recovery. His work includes research on Birmingham Hip Resurfacing at 20 years, hip replacement in patients with adverse spinopelvic mobility, distal femoral replacement and blood loss following total knee replacement. He is also a reviewer for Hip International and received the Alan Darby Medal in 2022 for exceptional published work in musculoskeletal tumour surgery. Mr Dhawan is committed to education and quality improvement. He trains orthopaedic registrars in theatre, facilitates FRCS teaching and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor. He has contributed to improvement projects covering joint replacement, patient safety, infection, rehabilitation and trauma care. During a consultation, Mr Dhawan aims to provide a careful assessment, a clear explanation of the diagnosis and an honest discussion of the likely benefits and limitations of each treatment. His goal is to help every patient make a well-informed decision and achieve the best possible return to comfortable movement and everyday activity.
