Mr Richard Johnson

Richard is a well trained Oncoplastic Breast surgeon who specialises in breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery and cosmetic breast surgery. He trained in medicine at Manchester and underwent specialist training in the form of a national breast fellowship towards the end of his postgraduate training (only 9 in the UK available). This is a prestigious award that involves further intense training dedicated to Breast reconstruction post mastectomy as well as learning cosmetic breast procedures such as Breast Augmentation. As well as undertaking the full spectrum of breast surgery, Richard has a particular interest in implant based reconstruction and has recently along with his colleagues pioneered a reconstruction technique using “pig skin” that facilitates a “one off” or single stage operation which reduces the need for potentially multiple operations in women who have had a mastectomy His NHS practice is at the University Hospital of South Manchester Nightingale Breast unit. This is one of the largest breast units in the country. It is also home to the Genesis breast cancer prevention centre which offers screening, diagnosis and treatment for those women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer. Richard is the clinical director for Breast, Plastic surgery and Burns surgery at the Nightingale and involves himself in clinical research focusing on new breast reconstruction techniques and outcomes. One area of expertise and interest for Richard is the use of implants in breast reconstruction which is a fantastic skill to have when assessing women for cosmetic breast surgery. In conjunction with his anaesthetic colleagues he is able to perform breast augmentation as a day case procedure in the vast majority of cases thereby limiting the time away from home and work.
