Dr Ray Mathew

I am a Gastroenterologist with expertise in hepatobiliary and pancreatic medicine and interventional endoscopy. I work at The Royal Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust where I am part of the expert consultant team that delivers gastroenterology, hepatobiliary and pancreatic medicine. I trained in the West Midlands and I have worked in the former Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust in 2008. I was the Clinical Director for Gastroenterology and designed and built the Trust’s new Endoscopy Unit at County Hospital. I moved to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust in 2013. I designed and built the Trust’s new JAG Accredited Endoscopy Unit at Cannock Hospital in 2014. I was the Clinical Director of Endoscopy at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust between 2019 and 2022. I was the Trust Lead Clinician for Cancer between 2019 and 2022. I have an active role in local and regional service restoration and recovery in Endoscopy and Cancer Services in the current COVID-19 corona virus pandemic. I was the Clinical Director for Gastroenterology between 2022 and 2024. Additionally, I have worked at Rowley Hall Hospital, with private healthcare provider Ramsay, and designed and built the hospital's first JAG accredited endoscopy unit in 2015. In addition to expertise in general gastroenterology and hepatology, I have established a large clinical and academic practice in hepatobiliary and pancreatic medicine and am active in clinical research, teaching and training. I am experienced in the management of acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders, irritable bowel syndrome and gastrointestinal cancer. My areas of specialist expertise include the management of gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic and biliary cancer; pancreatic disease and disorders of the bile duct. In addition to diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, I am an expert in advanced gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). I am a regional and national trainer in endoscopy, and I am part of the core faculty at the West Midlands Endoscopy Training Centre at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. I am active in clinical research and have previously published numerous peer-reviewed publications pertaining to hepatobiliary medicine and endoscopy. I am a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Royal College of Physicians of London, British Medical Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Gastroenterological Association and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
