Dr Ralph Abraham

I am an experienced consultant physician with the training and knowledge to combine cutting-edge treatments with compassionate, patient-centered care. across diabetes, clinical endocrinology, lipids and heart disease prevention, and obesity medicine. I was previously the Clinical Director of London Medical, a private clinic in Marylebone which I founded and which was a centre of excellence for diabetes, heart disease prevention, endocrinology, obesity and eye diseases. I see patients from all over the world and often as a tertiary referral in the fields of advanced and difficult diabetes (both Type 1 and Type 2), lipid disorders, heart disease and atherosclerosis prevention, clinical endocrinology and obesity medicine. The London Diabetes Centre, which I founded, is the leading private diabetes clinic in the UK and, supported by a first class team of consultants, dietitians and diabetes nurse educators, uses a modern but compassionate approach using advancing technology including pumps and sensors and insulin sparing medication to assist adults and children to achieve improved control without stress or hypoglycaemia. A recent audit of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients in my practice confirmed an average HbA1c of 7.1% (54 mmol/mol) after treatment with high satisfaction levels, low rates of hypoglycaemia and intense risk factor modification. I am also referred difficult diagnostic problems in general medicine. I am cognisant of guidelines but am modern in my approach, putting my patient’s health needs first and including them in decisions about their treatment. I have a PhD in Biochemistry on insulin resistance in the obese mouse and my early clinical research interests included work on energy and protein balance during weight loss and in diabetic neuropathy. I have been a clinical investigator in diabetes, obesity and endocrinology (over 60 peer reviewed publications). I participate in managing weight loss and lecture and advise on the clinical and physiological changes associated with GLP1 drug use. I have also acted as an expert witness with special reverence to diabetes, obesity, lipid disorders, foot ulceration and hypoglycaemia. I advise industry, lecture extensively and encourage best standards of care and new treatments in diabetes. I am an enthusiastic champion for the needs of diabetes patients.

I see patients for lipid disorders and heart disease prevention and run a service for patients with Familial hyperlipidaemia. My main interest is in diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2 and I have special interest in closed loop hybrid technology pumps and sensor options and modern closed loop solutions.
