Dr Protima Deb is a highly experienced Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist with a specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children. She holds a substantive NHS consultant post at The Royal London Hospital and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lectureship at Queen Mary University of London. Dr Deb qualified in Medicine from Imperial College London in 2002, having previously completed a BSc in Haematology. She began her paediatric training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) in 2006. She was appointed to the London Deanery’s Higher Specialist Training Programme in Paediatric Gastroenterology, completing her training in 2014. Her academic career is distinguished by a PhD in gut microbiota and inflammatory bowel disease from the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London (2019). She was appointed as a consultant during her PhD and has continued to integrate research into her clinical role ever since. Her research interests focus on the role of gut microbiota in paediatric IBD, with ongoing contributions to scientific studies and international presentations. Dr Deb is a passionate advocate for combining clinical excellence with research-led practice. She is actively involved in medical education and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. Her clinical expertise spans a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease, food allergies and intolerances, constipation, diarrhoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux, abdominal pain, and feeding and nutrition issues. Dr Deb speaks Bengali and Hindi, enhancing her ability to communicate with a diverse patient population. She is a member of several professional organisations including the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN), the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), the British Medical Association (BMA), and the Medical Defence Union (MDU). With a holistic, consultant-led, child-focused approach, Dr Deb is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to children and their families.
