GMC reg: 6025765I am a Professor in Trauma and Orthopaedics with specialist interests and training in hip and knee replacement and revision (redo) joint replacements. I studied at the University of Bristol and Cardiff University, obtaining my medical degree (MB ChB), a bachelor degree (BSc) in Pathology and a doctorate (PhD) in Orthopaedics from Bristol and a master’s degree (MSc) in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff. My higher clinical specialist training took place in London, Bristol and Vancouver. I have also completed a number of specialist fellowships (the highest level of surgical training) to enhance my surgical skills, including two of the most highly regarded, internationally recognised and prestigious fellowships in hip and knee replacement surgery: the Vancouver Fellowship in adult joint replacement and the Bristol Fellowship in advanced hip and knee surgery. During the course of my training, I also completed Research Fellowships with the British Hip Society (the McMinn Scholarship) and Royal College of Surgeon (Research Fellowship) and Travelling Fellowships with the British Orthopaedic Association and the Royal College of Surgeons. I specialise in the non-surgical and surgical management of disorders of the hip and knee. I have particular interests in the treatment of young adult hip disorders and the treatment of arthritis of the hip. I take a holistic approach to the care of my patients, with the aim of ensuring they are relieved of pain and restored to the level of function they wish to achieve. I take the time to ensure patients are aware of the various options open to them and help them to choose the best treatments for them. I keep their goals and expectations at the heart of the care I deliver. Part of my current research involves analysis of the National Joint Registry of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the largest of its kind in the world. This helps me to select the best implants and surgery for my patients, backed by strong evidence base and long term follow up. I am an enthusiastic trainer and teacher and I co-direct a Masters degree in Orthopaedics, designed the Orthopaedic elements of the new Bristol Medical School curriculum and co-founded the largest Minor Surgery and Musculoskeletal update courses for GPs in the country. I find being actively involved in teaching the next generation of doctors and surgeons to be both stimulating and rewarding.
