MBBS, DO, DO(London), MS, MNAMS, FRCS(Edinburgh), FEBO, FRCOphth, FRCP(Edinburgh, Hon.), FCOptom.(Hon.), FRCOphth.(Hon.), FAICO (India, Hon.), MD, PhD, is Chair and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Queens Medical Centre, University of Nottingham since 1994, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Honorary Professor of Universita della Svizze, Lugano, since 2010.
He was made Commander of the most excellent order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in her 2019 Birthday Honours list and served a full term as the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire (2021-22). He was recently awarded the NHS Parliamentary Lifetime Achievement award for the Midlands, Commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant in the Lieutenancy of Nottinghamshire and awarded the high rank of Commander of Merit of the Military and Hospitaller order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem.
He is Trustee of Twycross Zoo, UK, member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and the American Ophthalmological Society. He was the Master of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress (2019-2020), 9th President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists UK (2011-14) and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Ophthalmology (2007-14) and Editor-in-chief of the Journal of EuCornea (2015-22); President of EuCornea (2011-13); President of the European association for vision and eye research (EVER, 2008) and of the EVER Foundation (2010-14 and 2016-2020). He was Trustee of Sight Savers International (2008-12) and member of the International steering committee and ‘Definition and Classification committee’ DEWS II (2015-17).
He has supervised 54 post graduate (PhD, DM, MPhil) students. Amongst his over 150 awards, medals and accolades are The Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award (2013), The Times Higher Education Award 2014 for ‘Research project of the year’ and the Melvin Jones Fellow (Award) Lions Clubs International Foundation for humanitarian work. In November 2021 he received the European Awards in Medicine (Ophthalmology) award. He has been endowed with Honorary Fellowships of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists UK, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the College of Optometrists UK, and the Collegium of the All India Ophthalmological Society; the highest accolades conferred by the respective Colleges. One eponymous lecture, “The Dua Lecture” Birmingham, and a seminar room in the Nottingham post-graduate centre, “The Dua Room” are named in his honour.
He has over 400 peer reviewed publications with an H-index of 77 and over 23 thousand citations. His recent discovery of the pre-Descemet’s layer (Dua’s layer) in the human cornea has had considerable impact on lamellar corneal surgery and corneal pathology and led to the innovation of three new surgical procedures (PDEK, DALK-Triple and suture management of acute hydrops), and cast new light on corneal pathology.
