Renal medicine
Daniel Gale runs the genetic kidney disease clinical service for North Central London that provides care for patients and families with hereditary kidney problems, including polycystic kidney disease, Alport Syndrome, unexplained familial kidney failure and other genetic disorders. He looks after a large cohort of patients receiving disease modifying treatment for polycystic kidney disease and patients are frequently offered enrolment in clinical research studies, including those involving new treatments. Professor Gale conducts research into familial kidney disease and discovered the genetic diseases, and genes responsible for, HIF2a erythrocytosis, which results from a defect in cellular oxygen sensing, and CFHR5 nephropathy, which results from a defect of complement regulation and which is endemic in people of Cypriot ancestry.
