GMC reg: 3050792Emeritus Professor, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Medicine Cardiff University. Previously, Head of the Academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Medicine (2010-2013) and Senior Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine since April 1998. He qualified from the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, Iraq in 1974, obtained his MRCOG in 1985 and PhD in reproductive medicine from London University in 1996. His professional career journey in the UK began in 1981 progressing in training posts from West and East Sussex, then London and Newcastle Upon Tyne interrupted by a research spell (1987-1991) at the Royal Free Hospital, London. He finished his higher clinical training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne (1992-1994) and worked as a consultant at Gateshead Hospitals NHS Trust (1994-1998). The challenge of academia attracted him to Cardiff and in 1998 he moved to the University of Wales College of Medicine and University Hospital of Wales, where he established local, national and international clinical and research collaborations. Nazar's clinical interests have been in reproductive surgery and minimally invasive techniques and infertility. He has regularly supervised undergraduate and postgraduate (MD/PhD) students and was the Director of Cardiff University Ultrasound Masters programme for obstetric, gynaecological and medical ultrasound from 2004 to 2016. Nazar has been the local principal investigator of the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial for Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) and was a member of its ultrasound subcommittee between 2002-2015. He undertook many of the advanced scans, as well as provided advice and counselling for the trial’s volunteers. His clinical practice has since focused on developing new and innovative approaches to service delivery for benign gynaecology. He set up the first ultrasound based one-stop menstrual disorders clinic in Wales and introduced new treatments such as balloon endometrial ablation for menorrhagia and non-surgical interventions for fibroids. Other areas of clinical expertise include minimal access hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery, fertility investigations and treatments.
