Professor Prof Chris P Gale

Qualifying in medicine at the London Hospital Medical College and obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Professor Gale worked as a Junior Doctor at the Royal London Hospital. After becoming a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, he became a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellow and undertook at Ph.D in molecular biology at the University of Leeds. Speciality training in Cardiology was undertaken principally at the Leeds General Infirmary, where Professor Gale was a Walport and later a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and then NIHR Clinician Scientist. He holds a Masters in Clinical Education and a Masters in Statistical Epidemiology. Professor Gale was Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at York Teaching Hospital from 2010 to 2018, where he specialised in general cardiology, heart failure and survivorship following heart attack. Presently, he is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Leeds General Infirmary (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust), where he treats patients with a cardiovascular disease, and continues his specialist interest in heart failure and survivorship following heart attack. Professor Gale is Head of Clinical and Population Sciences Department at the University of Leeds. His research incorporates the efficient use of observational and randomised data to deliver population-based studies of cardiovascular quality of care and clinical outcomes. This includes the use of multi-source electronic health records for trial design, outcomes capture and taxonomy of cardiovascular survivorship. Presently, Professor Gale is leads a research group in the Medical Research Council Bioinformatics Centre at the Leeds Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine, University of Leeds. He holds major research awards predominantly from the National Institute for Health Research and British Heart Foundation, and has published over 140 research manuscripts in peer reviewed journals, including JAMA, Lancet, BMJ, EHJ. His research is often highlighted in the media, including BBC news, TV, radio, as well as gaining coverage in local and international newspapers. Professor Gale is a member of the British Cardiovascular Society, British Society for Echocardiography, British Society for Heart Failure, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology. He is a member of the MINAP Academic and Steering Groups and a member of the national Heart Failure Audit Academic Group. He is past co-Chair the National Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research (NICOR) Research Board, UCL. He is Chair of the Oversight Committee of the European Society of Cardiology EURObservational Research Programme, Chair of the ESC NSTEMI registry, member of the ESC Working Group for Performance Measures, and sits on the Board of the ESC.
