Mr Piergiacomo Grassi is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Vitreoretinal, Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery based at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester Surgical Experience & Sub-Speciality Expertise Mr Grassi’s expertise lies in vitreoretinal surgery, complex cataract surgery/refractive lens exchange and glaucoma surgery. This includes treatments for complex vitreoretinal conditions such as advanced diabetic retinopathy, complex PVR-related retinal detachments, paediatric vitreoretinal surgery, refractive lens exchanges, scleral fixation of intraocular lenses/secondary intraocular lenses and the use of micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). He specialises in the use of the latest micro-incisional vitreoretinal techniques such as 23G, 25G and 27G pars plana vitrectomy. Clinical Competency Mr Grassi is a Senior Lecturer for the University of Manchester. He is the current consultant vitreoretinal service lead and lead for the undergraduate medical education, for clinical clerkships and tutor for international visiting consultants/doctors in the Ophthalmology Department, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester, UK. He is actively involved in research, is an e-portfolio assessor for ophthalmology trainees/ST4-ST7 and delivers teaching to registrars and medical students. He routinely trains and supervises senior fellows and junior surgeons from around the world in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery. He is a keen researcher and in addition to 36 peer-reviewed publications in high impact ophthalmic journals, he has presented as first author at various national and international ophthalmology meetings, including in the USA, in the UK and in Italy. Training and Registration: He holds an M.D. He gained his medical degree from the University “Federico II” of Naples, Italy achieving honours and publishing his academic graduation thesis as a major review, and then completed his residency training in 2017, publishing his academic specialization thesis in ophthalmology as a major review in vitreoretinal surgery. In the same year he won two major scholarships to further his ophthalmic surgical training and completed two glaucoma fellowships at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, where he developed an interest in refractive lens exchange. He then completed two major vitreoretinal surgical fellowships at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield and at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and was subsequently appointed as Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester, UK.
