Professor Persis Amrolia trained at the Hammersmith Hospital, the National Institutes of Health, St Jude Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. He was appointed as a Consultant in Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) at Great Ormond St Hospital in 2002 and became Director of the BMT unit there in 2021. Prof Amrolia spends half his time looking after children undergoing BMT clinically and half on research. His research is based at the UCL Great Ormond St Institute of Child Health where he became Professor of Transplantation Immunology in 2010 and was awarded a prestigious National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Professorship in 2013. Persis has an outstanding record of translating cutting edge science into clinical benefit for patients and has developed a world class programme of research focused on 2 main areas: 1. Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cell therapy – using genetically redirected immune cells to treat relapsed/refractory leukaemia in children 2. Antibody-based conditioning to reduce the toxicity of BMT and Gene Therapy Prof Amrolia has led 11 cutting edge clinical studies of these approaches, has published 140 papers and was Chair of the UK Paediatric BMT group from 2016-20 and Scientific Chair of the British Society of BMT and Cell Therapy from 2013-18.
