Professor Paul Kalra is a Consultant Cardiologist with specialist interest in heart failure at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, UK. Paul is past chair of the British Society for Heart Failure (2017-2019). During his tenure he was instrumental in getting heart failure recognised as a national priority. He currently is an active member of NHS England’s ‘Heart Failure Expert Advisory Group’. Prof Kalra is commited to changing the culture of clinician dictated care to one of patient centric, holistic shared decision making. This includes focus on patient education and autonomy, service re-design including point of delivery of care, research with outcomes of value to patients and cost-effectiveness for the NHS. His commitment to championing optimal care for patients with heart failure was recognised by the UK’s largest heart failure patient charity, Pumping Marvellous Foundation, with their highest accolade in 2019 (citing ‘catalyst for bringing patient and clinician voice into alignment’). Paul is passionate about medical education, clinical research and cross specialty working. He co-founded the UK Cardiorenal Forum, which held its 20th annual meeting in 2025. He has been involved in question writing and exam setting for the European Exam in Core Cardiology for over 10 years and in 2020 was appointed Chair of the UK standard setting group for this exam. He has set up and leads a cardiovascular research programme in Portsmouth. He has been involved in many major cardiovascular outcome trials that have changed clinical practice. He was chief investigator for the British Heart Foundation funded IRONMAN study (outcome study of intravenous ferric derisomaltose in patients with chronic heart failure), which reported in November 2022 and has helped shape international heart failure guidelines, including European Society of Cardiology and NICE. He has over 1300 peer reviewed publications. Special clinical interests: Heart failure, assessment and follow up of device therapies (pacemakers, complex devices – implantable cardioverter defibrillators/cardiac resynchronisation devices), ischaemic heart disease (angina and following heart attack), valvular heart disease, palpitations.
