This information is provided by Ms Patricia Rorison.
Patricia trained at Glasgow University Medical School, graduating in 1990. Whilst studying to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Edinburgh 1994) she worked in a wide range of surgical specialties, general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery and plastic surgery. Her interest in Plastic surgery developed whilst working in the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit and she maintains a wide interest in teaching and training, for example as an instructor in the Emergency Management of Severe Burns. She has a special interest in wound healing with an MD from Manchester University in this topic. She completed her plastic surgery training in Newcastle upon Tyne and as a Cleft Lip and Palate Fellow in London in the South Thames Cleft Service (FRCS Plastic Surgery 2005). She was a Consultant Cleft Surgeon for 10 years in Birmingham Children’s Hospital (one of the largest cleft units in the UK) before moving to a Cleft Consultant post in Great Ormond Street in 2018. Her main interest is in the treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate and in particular the aim to ensure normal speech and communication for children born with a cleft palate. Like all UK cleft surgeons, her clinical results are audited annually and over her 13 years as a Consultant, her results for speech in 5 year olds she has operated on are consistently in the upper percentiles of the nationally reported outcomes. Working closely with specialist speech and language therapists she also has a special interest in treating patients with cleft-related speech problems, whether this is secondary to an already treated cleft palate or submucous cleft palate, or any of the syndromes or other diseases that may affect palate function. In particular Velocardiofacial or 22q11 microdeletion syndrome. She also has an interest in the treatment of cleft lip and palate related problems in the older child or adult – such as palate fistula, lip scar revision, cleft rhinoplasty.
