Professor Parwez Hossain is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton and University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust. He is recognised as one of the UK's leading ophthalmologists in Southampton and Winchester. He specialises in treating ocular surface diseases such as Dry Eyes, Blepharitis, and Pterygium, as well as corneal transplantation procedures, including DSEK and DMEK surgery, corneal infections, and cataracts. His particular interest lies in developing new approaches to managing corneal diseases, which also forms his current research focus. He has an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals, has authored several books, and holds the title of King James IV Professor of Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Professor Hossain has served as a consultant ophthalmologist at Southampton General Hospital for 19 years, establishing a leading corneal transplant and research centre. He pioneered imaging of corneal infections, surgical techniques to reduce vascularisation, and improved procedures for endothelial diseases. In 2011, he authored an influential article on Pterygium surgery in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' publication. His surgical practice includes a low-scar tissue glue-based method for pterygium. He is Chair of the Ocular Tissue Advisory Group for NHS Blood and Transplant, overseeing corneal transplants in the UK. Professor Hossain qualified in medicine at the University of Aberdeen and trained in ophthalmology in Aberdeen, Nottingham, Leicester, and Miami, USA. In 2001, he earned his PhD in ocular immunology and biomedical physics. His thesis focused on a new method for in vivo tracking of immune cells in the eye. This interest continued during his time as a clinical lecturer at Nottingham University, where he pursued research aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of corneal inflammation and infection. Professor Hossain specialises in cataract management, especially in treating corneal issues like astigmatism, pterygium, and Fuchs’ Dystrophy. In his cataract surgery work, he has significant experience with extended depth-of-field and toric intraocular lenses to ensure the best possible visual results. He also introduced the UK to the innovative continuous focus lens implants (Ophtec Presbyopic NVA Lens Implant), which have high patient satisfaction scores. His findings have been shared at the European Society for Cataract & Refractive Surgeons’ meetings and various international conferences. Professor Hossain has received numerous awards and grants, including funding from the Medical Research Council, the British Council for the Prevention of Blindness, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the Wellcome Trust. In 2018, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh honoured Professor Hossain with the King James IV Professorship in recognition of his work on corneal diseases and surgery. He also holds an N1 national award for his NHS services.
