Miss Petrie graduated in Medicine from the University of Bristol in 1997. She was successful in being appointed onto 1 of 2 fast track basic surgical training schemes, which included plastic surgery as part of the rotation. She gained her membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in 2001. She subsequently undertook a period of research at Harvard Medical School, studying the effect of gene therapy for wound healing at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachussets. She won a prestigious Fulbright scholarship for her first year of research and a Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation scholarship, awarded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for her second year. She returned to the UK and was appointed onto a Specialist training scheme, gaining wide experience in units including Chelmsford, Salisbury, Stoke Mandeville and Oxford. A mother of two, Niki Petrie combined full time training with having her family. Towards the end of her training Niki took up the post of Microvascular Fellow, training under Venkat Ramakrishnan. During this fellowship, Niki gained further specialist training in Breast Reconstruction, Skin Cancer, Hand Surgery (working with David Elliot) and Lower limb reconstruction. Niki’s further specialist training includes fellowships in Breast Reconstruction and skin Cancer at the John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford and visiting fellowships with Emmanuel Delay in Lyon and Raja Sabapathy at the Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, India. Niki was awarded the Mentor Award, for her Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgery fellowship under Barry Jones and Rajiv Grover in London. Niki’s career in Oxford continued with her appointment as a Consultant in January 2013 with a Specialist interest in Breast Surgery and Skin Cancer. During her career, Niki has won a number of national and international awards, she has published in peer review literature, has set up the Oxford BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness Group) and has worked as an Examiner for the University of Oxford Medical School.

Miss Petrie has a specialist interest in all forms of breast surgery including breast reduction, breast augmentation, breast uplift (mastopexy) and breast reconstruction. She has published articles and book chapters on this subject and the reconstructive techniques she employs include symmetrising surgery, implant-based surgery, latissimus dorsi pedicled flaps, microvascular free flap techniques including DIEP and TUG flap reconstructions, liposuction and liposculpture (fat transfer or lipofilling). Niki has a particular interest in risk reducing surgery for high risk genetic patients such as those with mutations in a BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53, PALB2, PTEN genes and those with Cowden syndrome. She has presented on this topic and on that of Congenital, developmental and acquired breast asymmetry due to conditions including hypoplastic breast, tuberous breast and Poland's syndrome. Niki has also presented and published on gene therapy for wound healing and skin surgery including that for both benign and malignant conditions. She is passionate about making surgery for the under 18s a happy experience where the young person is at the centre of decision making and the whole surgical journey is as free from anxiety as possible for both the child and the parent. Finally, Niki is passionate about empowering women and enabling them to feel confident in themselves and their bodies whether this is achieved through breast reconstruction after mastectomy, breast reduction, breast augmentation, body contouring surgery after massive weight loss, abdomninoplasty or labiaplasty.
