Dr Nicola Burch

Dr Burch was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Lead for Nutrition in 2011 at UHCW and was also Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology from December 2018 to October 2022.   Since her appointment, she has been instrumental in transforming and growing the gastroenterology, nutrition, and intestinal failure services at UHCW; such that they were awarded ‘Severe Intestinal Failure’ (SIF) unit accreditation in 2022.  As one of two designated SIF centres in the West Midlands, we serve a catchment area of over 3 million.  She has also been instrumental in supporting endoscopy service development from 6 rooms to 8 rooms to help support the increased demands on the service and expanded the department through appointing an additional 6 Gastroenterologists.   She has a specialist interest in Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel disease, Clinical Nutrition, Intestinal failure, and advanced endoscopy (including insertion of enteral feeding tubes, and endoscopic mucosal resection – EMR - of large polyps).  She is an accredited UK Bowel Cancer Screening colonoscopist.   She is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education and regularly delivers teaching sessions in Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition.   She was a member of the RCP Advisory Committee on Nutrition and Health (2021-2024) and is a member of the British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, having previously been Honorary Treasurer from 2015-2019.  She has been involved in several national publications such as the RCP Feeding at Risk Guidance, RCP Supporting people who have eating and drinking difficulties, and revised BSG gastrostomy guidelines (in press).   In her spare time she enjoys keeping active by doing CrossFit and taking on fitness challenges with friends.
