I trained at the University of Cambridge (Sidney Sussex College, 1990-93) before moving to the University of Oxford (St John's College, 93-96) winning prizes at both Universities and completing an MA. I moved to London to complete my General Medical training before starting a PhD at the University of Bath which examined basic mechanisms of the pain experience. I developed my interest in supporting research into chronic pain conditions and established the CRPS-UK Registry which now has more than 500 patients. I continue to recruit patients to studies and have more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. I joined Cambridge University Hospitals in 2007 where was Clinical Lead for Rheumatology for 10 years (2009-2019). I continue to Chair committees at the BSR and CRPS-UK and keep my full time NHS practice in Cambridge.
Rheumatology
I manage patient with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, back pain, neck pain and other regional pain syndromes of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, hands and feet. I have a specialist interest and conduct research for patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndromes. I manage patients with autoimmune and autoinflammatory disease as well including rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, other connective tissue disease and polymyalgic conditions including polymyalgia rheumatica. I can see children with arthritis and joint pain but this is a Specialty in its own right and is not usually part of my NHS practice.
