Mr Nicholas Penney is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon specialising in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is Service Director for General Surgery at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), where he leads the Upper Gastrointestinal Robotic Surgery programme. He provides private consultations and surgery at Spire Norwich Hospital and Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. His practice encompasses both general and specialist upper gastrointestinal surgery. He has particular expertise in gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, gastro-oesophageal reflux and hiatus and para-oesophageal hernia surgery, as well as the surgical management of oesophageal and gastric cancer. He offers open, laparoscopic (keyhole) and robotic surgical approaches, selecting the most appropriate treatment for each individual patient. Mr Penney established the Upper Gastrointestinal Robotic Surgery programme at NNUH and performed the region's first fully robotic minimally invasive oesophagectomy. He has a particular interest in developing and evaluating advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques. Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Penney has a strong interest in surgical education and training. He is the East of England Training Programme Director for Robotic Surgery and Endoscopy and leads regional robotic surgical training programmes. He holds a PhD from Imperial College London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mr Penney's specialist clinical interests include: • Gallstones and gallbladder disease, including laparoscopic (keyhole) gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) • Hernia surgery, including inguinal, femoral, umbilical and incisional hernia repair using open, laparoscopic and robotic techniques • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and anti-reflux surgery • Hiatus and para-oesophageal hernias, including laparoscopic and robotic repair • Achalasia and other oesophageal motility disorders • Diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy/OGD) • Oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery • Minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic upper gastrointestinal surgery He has particular expertise in advanced robotic surgery, including robotic hernia and hiatus hernia repair, gastrectomy and fully robotic minimally invasive oesophagectomy.
