Miss Menassa is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a special interest in cataract, corneal and ocular surface surgery. Her NHS practice is at St. Paul's Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where she is the clinical lead for cataract services. Miss Menassa takes pride routinely train resident doctors and post-training subspecialty fellows both from the UK as well as international fellow doctors from Italy and Australia to become specialised cataract, corneal and ocular surface surgeons. In addition, Miss Menassa is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Liverpool, where she trains and supervises student doctors and acts as an academic advisor at the School of Medicine. Miss Menassa has a particular interest in cataract surgery and premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs) where she prides herself to adopt an individual and personalised approach in proposing the IOL that most suits patients' requirements and their ocular health. She had introduced the toric IOL pathway at St Paul's Eye Unit to ensure patients get the best possible visual outcome following their cataract surgery. Miss Menassa is passionate about corneal surgery and routinely performs both lamellar and full thickness corneal transplant surgeries including DMEK and DSAEK endothelial transplants in one of the busiest corneal units in the country. She has a particular interest in treatment of keratoconus, including corneal collagen crosslinking, as well as inflammatory and autoimmune conditions affecting the ocular surface, including dry eye disease, blepharitis, allergic eye disease as well as mucous membrane pemphigoid, to name a few. In her clinical practice, Miss Menassa takes the time to get to know my patients and identify their needs which she always prioritises to achieve the best treatment and surgical results for them. Her patients praise her excellent communication skills and taking the time to listen to them and ensure the agreed treatment plans are the best for them. Miss Menassa a personal interest in research and was awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) thesis with great honours from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Currently, she is an investigator in collaborative research projects with the University of Liverpool, where her research team has been awarded a £2.1 million MRC grant to develop a corneal cell bandage in patients with chronic corneal issues. Miss Menassa is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and she is a member of Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO). She is the Regional Representative at RCO and the North-West representative at the Ocular Tissue Advisory Group (OTAG). Miss Menassa is a member of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), the Bowman Corneal Society and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
