This information is provided by Mr Myles Smith.
Mr Myles Smith is a Consultant Surgical Oncologist and General Surgeon at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, and Reader at The Institute of Cancer Research. He sees patients at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea, Fulham Road, and private patients at The Lister Hospital, Chelsea Outpatient Centre and Chiswick Medical Centre. He is also the Skin Cancer MDT Lead at The Lister Hospital. Mr Smith specialises in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of melanoma, advanced skin cancer, soft tissue sarcoma and complex abdominal, pelvic and retroperitoneal tumours. His practice includes surgery for advanced skin cancer, soft tissue and visceral melanoma, anorectal melanoma, retroperitoneal sarcoma, pelvic sarcoma, intra-abdominal sarcoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours. He also provides general surgery in the context of cancer care, particularly where diagnosis, staging or surgical management forms part of a wider oncological treatment plan. Mr Smith has an important diagnostic role for patients with soft tissue masses and suspected skin cancer. He runs the Chelsea Lump Clinic at Chelsea Outpatient Centre, assessing patients with lumps, soft tissue lesions and possible sarcoma, and supports the surgical diagnosis of skin cancer through clinical assessment, biopsy and multidisciplinary planning. He qualified in Medicine from the National University of Ireland in 1998 before undertaking specialist surgical training in Ireland and the UK. During his training, he completed a PhD focused on cancer biology and tumour recurrence, and subsequently undertook an international fellowship in General Surgical Oncology at the University of Toronto. Mr Smith has a particular clinical and academic interest in melanoma, advanced skin cancer and sarcoma. He has contributed to national melanoma guidance as a member of the NICE melanoma guideline committee, and chairs the UK guideline update for ano-urogenital mucosal melanoma. He is also actively involved in research and surgical innovation, including image-guided surgery and the development of new approaches to cancer care. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals and holds the European Board of Surgery Qualification in Surgical Oncology, having achieved a top score in the UEMS Surgical Oncology examination. Mr Smith’s approach is to provide clear, careful and individualised advice for patients with suspected, complex or rare cancers. He works closely with specialist multidisciplinary teams to ensure that diagnosis and surgery are appropriately planned and integrated with oncology, radiology, pathology and specialist nursing care.
