This information is provided by Mr Muhammad Umar.
I am a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in lower limb surgery, with a particular focus on hip and knee replacement, joint preservation, and complex trauma. My aim is to help patients regain mobility, independence, and confidence in everyday life through clear communication, personalised care, and evidence-based treatment. I place great importance on ensuring that patients fully understand their condition and the options available, so that decisions are made collaboratively and with reassurance. I completed my specialist orthopaedic training in the UK and undertook two highly regarded fellowships. I was awarded a Major Trauma Fellowship at Liverpool University Hospitals, where I developed advanced expertise in managing severe injuries, complex fractures, and multi-trauma patients. I then completed the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) National Clinical Fellowship at Wrightington Hospital, an internationally recognised centre of excellence, gaining advanced experience in lower limb surgery and joint replacement using modern techniques and implants. My practice spans both elective and emergency orthopaedics. I regularly perform hip and knee replacements, including total and partial joint replacements, and have completed over 500 joint replacement procedures. I also offer joint preservation options for patients who may benefit from alternatives to major surgery, particularly in the early stages of arthritis. Alongside this, I lead the management of complex trauma cases, including challenging fractures around joints and in the presence of previous joint replacements. Within my NHS Trust, I lead children’s orthopaedic care, managing both elective referrals and trauma presentations in close collaboration with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. I also lead the metastatic bone service, working with regional oncology centres to provide coordinated, compassionate care for patients with cancer-related bone disease. I am passionate about education and regularly mentor medical students and junior doctors. I hold leadership roles in clinical governance, helping to maintain high standards of safety, quality, and patient care. I believe in a holistic, patient-centred approach, where listening, explaining options clearly, and working in partnership with patients and their families are central to achieving the best outcomes. I am committed to continuous professional development and keeping up to date with the latest advances in orthopaedic practice. Outside medicine, I enjoy spending time with my family, motorbike riding, and landscape photography—interests that reflect my love of exploration, balance, and creativity.

My clinical practice encompasses lower limb arthroplasty, complex trauma, and children’s orthopaedics. I specialise in hip and knee replacement surgery, including both total and partial joint replacements, and regularly treat conditions such as osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and avascular necrosis. Having performed over 500 joint replacement procedures, my focus is on restoring mobility and improving quality of life through carefully tailored treatment for each individual. An important part of my work is offering joint preservation options for patients with early-stage arthritis, providing effective alternatives to major surgery where appropriate. I also manage sports-related knee injuries using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques, helping patients recover from ligament and cartilage damage and return to an active lifestyle. In trauma care, I lead the management of complex fractures, including peri-prosthetic and peri-articular injuries, applying contemporary surgical techniques to achieve the best possible functional recovery. I lead my Trust’s children’s orthopaedic service, providing specialist care for both elective and emergency presentations. Working closely with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, I ensure that young patients receive expert, age-appropriate treatment tailored to their individual developmental needs. I also lead the metastatic bone service, overseeing the orthopaedic care of patients with cancer-related bone disease. This involves close collaboration with regional oncology centres to provide coordinated, compassionate, and comprehensive care. Alongside my clinical work, I am an Educational Supervisor for medical students from the University of Buckingham and am deeply committed to mentoring and developing future doctors. I play an active role in clinical governance, supervising junior colleagues and contributing to audit and quality improvement, ensuring that patient care remains safe, effective, and continually evolving.
