GMC reg: 6092170I am an orthopaedic spinal surgeon appointed in Gloucestershire and currently work for Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust. I completed my CCT in orthopaedic surgery here in the UK and spine fellowships in London Ontario, Canada and Cardiff, Wales. During my fellowships I gained experience in degenerative spine surgery, trauma spine surgery including the treatment of primary and secondary spine tumours and paediatric scoliosis surgery. During my Canadian fellowship I conducted research into the biomechanical stability of 3 different types of fixation for high grade spondylolisthesis, and I also conducted research on chronic lumbar disc herniations. My NHS practise is in adult degenerative spine and general orthopaedic trauma. I am passionate about teaching, and improving diversity in spine surgery. I am a qualified ATLS instructor and have taught on over 16 provider courses. As a trainee, I organised departmental teaching programmes in general orthopaedics, spines, journal club and I have continued to do this as a consultant. I have also been invited to help lecture medical students at the University of Nottingham, and give tutorials to those taking exams. I have helped teach FRCS spine in a viva format to trainees in Bristol and Cardiff. During the COVID19 pandemic, I have been teaching online lectures to our trainees via Zoom and have also delivered online teaching to anaesthetic colleagues in other hospitals. I am the first female elected member to the British Association of Spinal Surgeons executive committee and am currently their membership representative. In the 2 years prior to this I was a co-opted invited diversity representative, having been an invited speaker at several of their annual meetings on the topic of diversity and on the topic of my overseas fellowship experience. I have organised a diversity webinar previously for BASS and more diversity activities are planned including a women in spine education event. I have also given talks to numerous medical schools and organisations about a career in spine surgery (BOTA, Bristol medical school, Hull and York medical school, Raffles Girls School (Singapore). I am author of 12 published papers and have had poster and podium presentations at international conferences including Canada (CSS), Copenhagen, Madrid, San Francisco, Geneva, Chicago, Prague, national BOTA, BASS, BSS, ASIT, ERAS, BOA, Britspine, MWF and local conferences South West Medical Education Meeting, South West Registrar day Orthopaedic meeting, East Midlands Deanery Meeting and Malkin Memorial Meeting. I have organised and hosted the first Women in Spine Education Meeting in the UK, held November 2022. I completed an MSc in Medical Education at the University of Nottingham in 2013 for which I was awarded a Distinction for both research project and degree overall. I was a student of the prestigious BOA Future Leaders Program which I completed in 2020.
