GMC reg: 7658129Phillipa Burns did her surgical training based in Edinburgh. This included a two year period doing research into peripheral arterial disease, and a year’s fellowship in Sydney, Australia where she received advanced training in minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of vascular disease. She was appointed as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh in 2009. Phillipa Burns undertakes all aspects of vascular surgery. She has extensive experience in the management of varicose veins, including radiofrequency ablation, open surgery and foam sclerotherapy. Her training in ultrasound during her time in Australia has helped her set up a one-stop varicose vein service, avoiding the need for patients to return for a separate scan appointment. She helped implement the use of Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) in Edinburgh – a newer, less invasive method of treating abdominal aortic aneurysms. Her other areas of expertise are in carotid artery surgery, lower limb bypass surgery and the formation of fistulas for haemodialysis access. Phillipa Burns plays a leading role in the education of junior surgeons, with practical and online vascular surgical courses.
