Mr. Mrinal Rana is a world class, experienced, affable, and highly skilled Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust . A former Head of Service , he currently leads the Cornea Service , providing expert care across Coventry, Warwickshire, and the surrounding regions and has expanded to London , for both routine and complex cataracts , as well as a wide range of corneal diseases and dystrophies —including bacterial and viral keratitis, allergic conjunctivitis, keratoconus, corneal erosions, pterygium , and dry eye disease (age-related, contact lens-related, and systemic). Under his leadership, several innovative services have been established, including a Nurse-led Dry Eye Service , Nurse- and Optometrist-led Keratoconus and Corneal Cross-Linking Service , Lamellar Corneal Transplantation Service and the introduction of a Bilateral Sequential Cataract Surgery (BSCS) pathway. These advancements have significantly enhanced patient access, safety, and continuity of care—benefiting both NHS and private patients alike. Mr Rana completed his ophthalmology training in the UK across prestigious centres in Liverpool, Leicester, Birmingham, and Cambridge , followed by two advanced corneal fellowships . His career spans over two decades , during which he has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to several research projects in his subspecialty. His extensive clinical experience and deep understanding of ocular surface and corneal pathology enable him to deliver cutting-edge, evidence-based treatments with a holistic, patient-centred approach . His commitment to excellence has been recognised through consistently outstanding patient feedback and multiple nominations for “Best Consultant-Led Service” at NHS Achievement Awards. Outside his clinical practice, Mr Rana is passionate about humanitarian work , regularly participating in charitable initiatives to combat reversible blindness in underserved communities. He is currently planning to lead a surgical mission in Cambodia with the Khmer Sight Foundation . Beyond medicine, he believes strongly in maintaining a healthy work–life balance. He enjoys tennis and badminton —often playing socially with his children, who are county-level tennis players—and represents his hospital in cricket . In his leisure time, he appreciates stand-up comedy, musicals, and is developing a growing interest in philharmonic and opera performances.
