Vladimir Bobic is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon in full-time clinical and surgical practice. He is the Director and founder of Chester Knee Clinic and Cartilage Repair Centre in Chester, since 1996. Mr Bobic is an internationally recognised expert and one of the UK’s clinical pioneers in knee articular cartilage MR imaging, repair and rehabilitation. Mr Bobic has 30 years of extensive experience in all aspects of knee surgery, including arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, knee arthroplasty, and particularly in articular cartilage repair. He is the founder of the Liverpool Knee Service and a former full-time NHS knee surgeon at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool (1996 to 2002). He is the inventor and instrument designer of Arthrex OATS (Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System) articular cartilage repair technology. He performed the first ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) in the North West of England in 1998, and continues to perform a wide range of cartilage repair procedures. He continues to focus on articular cartilage repair, which is his main clinical, imaging and research interest. His clinical and surgical practice includes all contemporary articular cartilage repair technologies like subchondral drilling (or microfracture), OATS (autologous osteochondral grafting, which is often combined with implantation of autologous bone marrow aspirate), AMIC (deep subchondral drilling combined with collagen ChondroGide membrane), ACI (autologous chondrocyte implantation) and autologus stem cell-based therapies. Mr Bobic has a decade long experience with using autologous bone marrow aspirate in combination with deep subchondral drilling and autologous osteochondral grafting (OATS) for the treatment of mild to moderate distal femoral osteoarthritis. Mr Bobic is a dedicated teacher and sought-after orthopaedic lecturer throughout the world: since 1996 he has given over 300 invited lectures on knee surgery at major international and national conferences. He has published numerous articles on knee articular cartilage injury, repair and imaging. He is involved in international collaborative clinical and basic science research related to knee articular cartilage imaging, repair, rehabilitation and functional outcomes. He organised the first regional seminar on the use of Autologous Stem Cell Therapies in Orthopaedics which was held in Chester in June 2013. He is one of the founding members of the ICRS since 1997, a former member of the ICRS General Board, a founder of the ICRS Imaging Committee and Rehabilitation Work Group and ICRS Fellow since 2006. He was a Visiting Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine (1998) and a Visiting Professor of Orthopaedic Sciences at the University of Chester (2012 to 2017). He is a member of the BMA, BOA, BASK, BOSTA, ISAKOS and a honorary member of the AANA and AOSSM.
