Mr Vijay Hegde has over 25 years of experience in Ophthalmology. He was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist in 2010 and works at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary & BMI Albyn Hospital. He has undergone extensive training in cataract and retinal surgery and has undertaken surgical fellowships in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and Aberdeen. Mr Hegde specialises in performing complex cataract surgery including topical or no needle cataract surgery. His routine cataract surgery involves micro incision with full choice of intraocular lenses to reduce spectacle dependency. He is one of the early adopters of latest ophthalmic technologies, using sutureless, local anaesthetic vitrectomy for an early post-operative recovery. Mr Hegde is actively involved in clinical research. He has numerous publications and presentations under his name. He is recognised as a surgical trainer both for cataract and vitreoretinal surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is currently the clinical lead for ophthalmology department in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He also enjoys training medical students, nurses and optometrists. He is an examiner for FRCSEd examination at Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is currently the Regional Educational Advisor for Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is married and lives with 2 children and a dog. In his down time he likes to spend time with his family, playing cricket and golf. He volunteers an an official at Gordonians Cricket Club and enjoys working and training juniors.
