Before becoming a Consultant in 2007, Mr McMullan spent 11 years training as an ophthalmologist with extensive sub-specialisation in oculoplastics (facial and eyelid plastic surgery) in both the UK and the USA. In the UK Mr McMullan honed his skills in functional, non-cosmetic surgery whilst in the States he refined his expertise in cosmetic procedures at the Center for Facial Appearances, home to two of the leading ophthalmic plastic surgeons in America. His training both sides of the Atlantic has enabled Mr McMullan to choose the best practice and techniques from both to optimise results for both patient and surgeon. A Cambridge graduate with a PhD in molecular genetics Mr McMullan has retained an interest in research, both clinical and scientific. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and presented at national and international conferences. Until April 2022 he was Director for Undergraduate Studies at Northampton General and honorary senior lecturer at University of Leicester. He was Lead Clinician in the ophthalmology department at NGH until he handed over the reins in February 2016, and the Chair of the Local Professional Network (part of NHS England), until handing the reins in April 2018. Mr McMullan is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society and the European Society of Oculoplastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS). He is a previous ESOPRS junior award winner. He was made a Trustee of NAB, the Northamptonshire Association for the Blind, in 2014.
