I grew up in London and went to Birmingham Medical School, graduating in 1989. I worked in Birmingham, Worcester & Oxford, before spending a year in the Trauma Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town 1994-5. I completed my higher surgical training (HST) in Orthopaedics and Trauma on the Oxford Regional Training Programme 1995 to 2001, the last year being Orthopaedic Trauma Fellow at Vancouver General Hospital / University of British Columbia. I was appointed as a consultant in T&O in Swindon, now at the Great Western Hospital, in October 2001, and have remained there since. I was the Royal College Tutor for the Trust from 2003 to 2010. I was appointed and remain clinical lead for the Trauma Unit in 2011, and was departmental clinical lead from 2014 to 17. I undertook a nine month stint as an honorary consultant in Orthopaedic Trauma at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwick in 2017-18, and was appointed surgical clinical lead for our proposed new rehabilitation centre to be based on the GWH site in 2019. I have a busy elective specialist knee and trauma practice, and remain on the trauma rota. I have continued research, clinical teaching, surgical training and supervision roles. My key areas of active research centre on patient diagnosis, clinical complexity and its implications and patient outcomes following surgical and non-surgical treatments. I live in the Cotswolds, with my wife, and enjoy the great outdoors, and continue to run, ski, play 5aside football and tennis. I enjoy travel, histories of all kinds and the theatre.

Special clinical interests
I have a busy elective knee and trauma practice, and remain on the trauma rota. My principle elective practice is surgery of the knee, including soft tissue arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, primary and revision knee replacement surgery including partial joint replacements and osteotomy surgery. I have devoted my specialist elective skills to surgery around the knee joint only for the past 10 years. My specialist trauma interest is periarticular and periprosthetic lower limb fracture surgery. As a full time NHS consultant , I continue with both independent and multi-centre research and have published as of 2021, 24 peer reviewed journal articles and presented over 130 times at national and international meetings. My principle research interests are clinical and diagnostic complexity, outcomes following knee joint replacements, pain after knee surgery, knee ligament injuries, hip fractures, peri-articular fractures. I am currently clinical lead for an exciting new research collaboration with the University of Bath's Department of Health. I continue to teach, train and mentor junior doctors, students and other professions both formally and informally. I have taught on national and international course faculties over the past 2 decades and continue to do so. I am a member and steering committee member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, as well as a member of BASK, the BOA and the Girdlestone Orthopaedic Society..
