I have been practising in the Cardiff & Vale uLHB (formerly NHS Trust) as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist since 2002 with a special interest in urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, heavy menstrual bleeding and infertility. I have extensive experience in advanced vaginal and laparoscopic surgery. I trained at University of Wales College of Medicine Cardiff and qualified in 1989. My post graduate training was in South Wales during which I also completed my MD Thesis in The Role of Power Doppler Ultrasonography in Reproductive Medicine when I spent two years in the Cardiff Assisted Reproduction Unit and in the Reproductive Medicine team with Professor Shaw between 1995-1999. I was appointed in my current post as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Cardiff in 2003. I received training in urology and gynaecology throughout my career. Since 2003, I have developed the Urogynaecology service in the Cardiff and I now lead a multidisciplinary team in Cardiff which has strived to deliver the best available care for women presenting with urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in South Wales. During my career I was privileged to do a sabbatical at the Urogynaecology Unit at King’s College Hospital London with the world renowned expert in Urogynaecology, Professor Linda Cardozo. The Urogynaecology service in Cardiff offers a comprehensive service for the investigation (e.g.Cystoscopy/Urodynamics) and treatment (e.g. Bulking agents/Colposuspension/Fascial sling/Botox/Tibial Nerve Stimulation) of urinary incontinence, as well as complex prolapse or pelvic floor surgery (e.g. sacrospinous fixation and colpocliesis) including laparoscopic urogynaecological surgery. I am experienced in uterine preserving prolapse surgery and the management of synthetic vaginal mesh related problems. I am the preceptor for trainees doing their Advance Training Skills Module (ATSM) in Urogynaecology and Vaginal surgery in Cardiff; hence I train and supervise senior SPR’s in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the use of continence and prolapse procedures. I have offered training to sub specialists/Post CCT trainees in Urogynaecology procedures in the past. In addition, I have an expertise in infertility/assisted reproduction, early pregnancy problems, endometriosis and abnormal/heavy menstrual bleeding. The management of obstetric perineal injuries is another area of expertise which was developed within the urogynaecology service in Cardiff. I have continued with my passion for research and evidence based medicine and I have presented work at numerous meetings both nationally and internationally.
