Academic Background: After surgical training in the NHS & Military hospitals on the South Coast of the UK, Mr Philip Charlesworth went to the University of Oxford in 2004 to begin a post-graduate degree in the Molecular Genetics of Urological Malignancies, at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford. In 2007 Mr Philip Charlesworth initiated his Specialist Surgical training in Urology & Uro-Oncology within the hospitals of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire & Oxfordshire. The final years of specialist training were concentrated on robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery & open surgery for major urological cancers and subsequent surgical reconstruction. In 2012, Mr Philip Charlesworth was awarded a British Urological Foundation Robotic Preceptorship with Professor Indebir Gill and his robotic surgical team at the University of Southern California Institute of Urology, Los Angeles, California, USA. Professor Inderbir Gill is arguably one of the greatest minimally invasive surgeons in the world. Mr Philip Charlesworth also has experience working with the robotic surgical teams of Guy's & St Thomas Hospitals, London, Regina Elena Hospital, National Cancer Institute, Rome, Italy, and Harlev University Hospital, Copenhagen. Currently: Mr Philip Charlesworth was appointed as a substantive Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2012, and joined the Reading Urology Partnership in 2013. Over this time he has established himself as one of the leaders in pelvic uro-oncology (major prostate & bladder cancer) in the region. Mr Charlesworth has performed approximately 500 complex robotic major pelvic uro-oncological cancer operations in the past few years, and is ranked as one of the highest volume surgeons according to nationally published statistics.Recent Developments: Bladder Cancer & Robotic Surgery In April 2014 he became the lead for major pelvic cancer operations for patients in Berkshire and South Oxfordshire, serving a population of 1.1 million people. He now heads the Berkshire Cystectomy Team, and has pioneered a number of exciting developments in bladder cancer surgery, leading to big improvements in patient care, and novel approaches in the subsequent reconstruction to improve functional outcome for his patients following major pelvic cancer surgery. The biggest development has been the introduction of robotic surgery. Mr Charlesworth now routinely performs these complex operations entirely using the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, including bowel reconstruction and new bladder formation, and is one of only a handful of Surgeons in the UK to acheive this. He has been guided by one of the most skillful and experienced robotic Surgeons in the world, Professor Magnus Annerstedt from the famous Institute of Karolinska, Sweden. A centre of international excellence. Professor Annerstedt has visited Mr Philip Charlesworth on numerous occasions to proctor and oversee the introduction of this new complex sur
