Mr Nigel Mercer

Nigel is the senior plastic surgeon in Bristol and was appointed as a plastic surgeon in 1991. He has enormous experience and an excellent reputation in cosmetic surgery. Presidencies of BAPRAS, BAAPS, EASAPS,  the FSSA and the chairing the Surgical Forum have allowed Mr Mercer to be at the heart of the public discussion about the rationalisation and regulation of aesthetic surgery and medicine. Patient safety is of paramount importance in his work and he has presented regularly at national and international cosmetic conferences. He was the first international member of the Board of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has championed the role of the psychologist in the work of plastic surgeons, helping to set up 'Outlook' at Frenchay Hospital, and also chairs the steering group for the Centre of Appearance Research at the University of the West of England as well as the European Cleft Organisation, a charity which provides support and training for families with a child with a cleft. He is also the Honorary Civilian advisor in Burns and Plastic Surgery to the RAF as well as a Non Executive Director of PHIN and the medical director of Sure Insurance Services.
