He graduated from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, London in 1996 and trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital for eight years, including undertaking two medical retinal fellowships and as a locum consultant in 2007. He was appointed a consultant in medical retina and cataract, and education supervisor and diabetic retinal clinical lead, 2007-13. In 2012 Mr Islam was nominated for a National Macular Disease Society Award by patients for excellent service delivery and clinical care. He has published over 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored "Crash Course in Ophthalmology". In 2016 Mr Islam was appointed as clinical lead for quality and safety at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
