GMC reg: 6038669Michael Silva is a Consultant Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic (HPB) and General Surgeon and was appointed Consultant Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2009. Mr Silva completed Higher Surgical Training in the West Midlands, UK and trained extensively in HPB Surgery along with Liver Transplantation at the Liver Unit, University Hospital Birmingham. He obtained a MD in 2007 following research into the effects of ishaemic injury caused to the liver during surgery and transplantation, from the University of Birmingham. Mr Silva deals with surgical treatments for the whole spectrum of HPB disease. These comprise of gallstone, biliary and pancreatic disease including pancreatitis. Surgery for cancer of the liver, biliary system and the pancreas also fall within his expertise. He also has a special interest in the treatment of bile duct injuries sustained at surgery. Mr Silva also offers total pancreatectomy and islet auto-transplantation for a very select group of patients with chronic pancreatitis and is the Oxford lead for this national programme. Currently Mr Silva is Clinical Lead at the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and was chair of the Liver Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)for the Thames Valley Network (2012-2021). Mr Silva is the Training Programme Director for Higher Surgical Trainees (General Surgery) in the Oxford Deanery - Health Education England - Thames Valley Mr Silva is a Council Member of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and also Director of the Surgical Advisory Network in the UK for the College. He also was Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for Oxfordshire from 2013-2017. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is also a Clinical Lecturer at Worcester College, Oxford University. For exceptional services rendered to surgical training he was awarded the Faculty of Surgical Trainers medal in 2021. Mr Silva was a specialist advisor to the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) , interventional procedures program (2018-2021) served on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Surgery (Open) (2015-2021) and Current Surgery Reports. He is a reviewer for many leading scientific journals. He has in excess of 80 publications in international peer reviewed journals and has written many book chapters on his speciality interests.
