In my Consultant post at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where I have been since April 2006 my main areas of practice are cataract surgery and glaucoma. I also have general ophthalmology clinics and I carry out laser procedures and basic eyelid surgery. I carry out a lot of cataract surgery which I enjoy greatly and I am particularly interested in safe surgery to provide good outcomes and minimise complications. I employ the latest techniques and guide patients through the various lens options best suited for their individual needs. I firmly believe in the family test for my patients in that I only carry out procedures that I myself would have or advise a member of my own family. I keep up to date by participating in the main Regional, National and International meetings within my areas of specialist interest and use the latest evidence based techniques and lens options. As College Tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London, I am responsible for the training of Ophthalmology registrars. I enjoy teaching them good surgical techniques and safe practice in eye surgery. I also examine and set questions for the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) of Edinburgh. I am part of the team that assess whether doctors have the skills and knowledge to be awarded the Fellowship exam of the College to establish themselves as Surgeons in Ophthalmology. After my registrar training I gained fellowships in glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London where I worked for over a year . I enjoy keeping in touch with colleagues there to discuss difficult cases and I am a regular attendee at the Moorfields International Glaucoma Symposium. I gained further fellowships in Cataract Surgery at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, and in Medical Retina at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre My registrar training in Ophthalmology was in the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre where I was also a research fellow and Senior House Officer early in my ophthalmology career. I trained to be a doctor and graduated in 1993 from Manchester University Medical School. Having worked in the largest and busiest Eye Hospitals in the UK (Moorfields London, The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre) I have a wide range of expertise and good links within my specialty so that my practice is safe, current and forward thinking.
