I am a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in cataract and retinal surgery. I work at Newmedica Bristol where I'm the lead clinical surgeon, and the Bristol Eye Hospital, where I'm the lead for retinal surgery. I practice and teach patient-focused medicine based on scientific evidence. I lead regular teaching courses and sessions to keep up to date and share knowledge with peers and trainees. I have specialist skills in the management of complex cataract cases as well as the repair of complicated cataract surgery. I routinely perform bespoke cataract surgery implanting toric lenses for the correction of astigmatism, and multifocal or extended focus lenses to reduce the need for near vision glasses. I carry out vitrectomy surgery, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal detachment, and dislocated lens implant surgery. I am in charge of training cataract surgeons at Newmedica Bristol and retinal surgeons at the Bristol Eye Hospital. I am grateful to have trained in centres for eye care excellence in the UK and around the world, honing a wide repertoire of medical, surgical, and leadership skills. I am a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of the UK and hold the equivalent title from Spain. I'm particularly proud of having done the prestigious VR surgery fellowships at the Bristol Eye Hospital, which I now lead, and the Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia. I also work in leadership roles focusing on improving patient safety and quality of care.
