Mr Jahangir Ahmed

Jahangir Ahmed is a respected ENT consultant, specialising in laryngology, head, neck and thyroid surgery.  He was educated at Kings College, Cambridge University where he achieved the Harmer prize for Medicine and attained an MA in experimental psychology. He completed clinical education at Imperial College, London, graduating with the Gold-medal in Pathology. He completed higher specialist training in major London teaching hospitals, during which time he was awarded competitive research fellowships from The Welcome Trust, The Barts and London Charity and was a Royal College of Surgeons Academic research fellow. He completed a PhD at The Barts Cancer Institute, where he genetically optimised Vaccinia viruses for immune-therapeutic cancer treatment. Mr Ahmed has a high-volume practice and expertise in the surgical management of benign and malignant head and neck tumours of all subsites including tonsil, pharynx, larynx, salivary gland and thyroid. He is one of the core thyroid surgeons in the Barts Health Thyroid multi-disciplinary team; this is one of the largest thyroid cancer groups in the UK. He is one of the few surgeons designated to perform selective neck dissection in thyroid cancer patients with advanced disease. He is skilled in transoral (scarless, through-the-mouth) laser and robotic surgery, with one of the highest-volume transoral robotic surgical practices in the UK. Mr Ahmed has significant experience in managing voice, complex airway and swallowing problems. Uniquely, he runs a tertiary level practice in the surgical management of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) refractory to continuous positive airway pressure at Barts Health, in collaboration with respiratory colleagues who specialise in OSA. In the NHS, he also maintains a substantial advanced endoscopic sinus surgical practice and is therefore in a unique position to offer high-quality management of conditions affecting the entire upper aero-digestive tract, from nasal cavity to voice box. He is the current chairman and lead of the Bart’s Head and Neck cancer multi-disciplinary team and has an honorary clinical lectureship at Queen Mary, University of London. He has a keen research interest in minimal access ENT cancer surgery, and molecular and immunotherapy of cancers.
