GMC reg: 6149401Mr Vanhegan is a dedicated hip surgeon who is passionate about improving the experience and outcomes for his patients. He has a wealth of clinical experience and an impressive academic background to provide a highly specialised service tailored to your individual needs. His main interests are in optimising recovery after joint replacement and he boasts has an excellent track-record in same-day discharge. His main research interest lies in hip replacement design and he holds experience in both pre-clinical (laboratory) and clinical research in this field. Mr Vanhegan was born and educated in London and completed his higher surgical training on the prestigious North-West Thames rotation (Imperial CollegeHealthcare). At a formative stage in his career he gained phenomenal experience under influential trainers in hip surgery and knew that’s where his interests lay. He obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2018 and went on to complete three UK-based fellowships (Oxford, Reading and Royal National OrthopaedicHospital Stanmore). These positions focused on primary and revision (‘re-do’) joint replacement as well as in young adult hip surgery (‘hip preservation’). A highlight in training was being awarded the highly competitive Hip Fellowship from the BritishHip Society which he used to good effect broadening his international exposure to joint replacement surgery in Chicago and Vancouver. His NHS appointment sees him manage a broad range of lower limb (hip & knee) disorders to included hip preservation, joint replacement and trauma. In addition to his clinical practice he has additional governance interests including hip fracture management where he is the Clinical Lead for this service which has been rated as one of the best in the country. Mr Vanhegan is an enthusiastic educator and has been appointed as Surgical Tutor to the Royal College of Surgeons with over-sight of surgical training in his hospital aspart of the Wessex Deanery. He sits on interview panels, training committees and regularly appraises doctors in training (ARCP).As an international sportsman himself (rowing & road cycling) he is drawn to the management of elite athletes. He worked alongside the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the London 2012 Games collecting and analysing data on the injuries and illnesses of athletes and published several papers from this experience. He continues to participate to a competitive level in sport and recently completed a100km Ultramarathon. Mr Vanhegan is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Hip Society, Hip Preservation Society (ISHA), and the European Bone & Joint Infection Society.
