My main area of clinical interest is hip and knee replacement surgery, both primary and revision (redo) operations. These operations are very rewarding, as the vast majority of patients are relieved of pain, and recover valuable function. I have been an Orthopaedic Consultant in Cheltenham since Sept. 2000. Gloucestershire is a great area to practice medicine, and is the end of my gradual migration south (University of Aberdeen 1983-8, Raigmore Hospital Inverness 1988-9, Woodend Hospital Aberdeen 1989-90, Royal Infirmary Chester 1990-91, University of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals 1992-2000) After many years contributing to the National Joint Registry (Operating surgeon for 1707 primary hips and 1083 primary knees). I am pleased that mortality is low, and reassured that less than 3% of my recorded primary operations have required revision (redo) during the patient's lifetime. Good results come from thorough assessment, shared decision-making, realistic expectations, using proven implants/techniques, and vigilance in preventing complications. For the right patients, an artificial hip or knee can be a new lease of life. I am happy to explain the risks and benefits of all treatments, in as much detail as required - many patients have signed sketches where we have discussed operations. Within the local NHS, I have contributed as Chief of Surgery, Clinical Director, Departmental Lead for Audit, Departmental Lead for IT, and Departmental Lead for Infection Control. It has been my pleasure to recruit a number of great colleagues, and be involved in ongoing improvements to our local services for patients. My private practice is based at the Nuffield Hospital, Cheltenham, where I am supported by a great team. We can usually see patients within two weeks, and operate within two months. I feel my fees are fair and reasonable, although I am not willing to give control of my fees to insurance companies - shortfalls for surgical fees are very infrequent and always discussed beforehand.
